Grief and bereavement are key themes in palliative care, and palliative care services are well placed to lead progress in provision of bereavement care. Substantial evidence exists regarding the impact of bereavement on health outcomes and risk factors for complex grief, and the effectiveness of clinical interventions for such complications. Key clinical features and patterns of complicated grief will be presented, along with an overview of evidence regarding clinical interventions to address these consequences of bereavement. This will include discussion of strategies that can be implemented by health professionals in their provision of palliative care to patients and families that may enhance bereavement outcomes, along with discussion of some current challenges for bereavement programs in palliative care services.
