Support for family caregivers is a core aspect of palliative care provision. Family caregivers provide the bulk of support to patients receiving palliative care; without this assistance, patients’ well-being and capacity to remain at home would be compromised. Family caregivers are prone to negative psychological, physical, social and financial sequelae. Although family caregivers are commonly acknowledged as ‘hidden patients’, the support that they receive from health services is often unsystematic and incomplete. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a brief overview and critical appraisal of the empirical evidence related to interventions focused on improving the wellbeing of family caregivers.
